Hi there,

I'm new to this forum, my name is Gillian & I live in Melbourne.

I wanted to share with you good people a newspaper article from the Melbourne Sunday 'Age', it was only published this Sunday gone.

Physical Illness or internet virus? Under the skin of a medical mystery.
http://www.theage.com.au/national/physi ... -he52.html

Unfortunately DOP was mentioned  I told the reporter there was no such thing as DOP, if so it's EXTREMELY rare. My question has always been 'How do the naysayers explain the hair/fibres if this is meant to be a delusion!!"

Any way the main thing is WE got some exposure, & who knows more sufferers may not feel so scared to come forward now.

Best wishes to you all
Gillian :)

thanks Gillian for your post and welcome :D

yes exposure is good and I agree. if someone has not touched their skin how did these lesions appear. they could do a 24 hour surveillance to record so they could see that we don't scratch or pick or make these lesions! and we certainly don't want the painful fibres!

off to read the article :)

My God! that is dreadful. It does seem after sometime that most of the lesions heal on their own.. the way they wrote it the article suggests they went away because you stopped scratching! they still come and go whether one scrathes or not. I do not scratch or pick having suffered all variety of skin rashes due to allergies, and I still get lesions but they do heal easier than Peter's which can take weeks. Like you though he 'needs' to remove the fibre. For me it is in my blood so whether I get that one fibre out or not it is all the same.

I wonder what they think makes those white marks? I have them and I didn't scratch! yes the doctors just cry wolf cause it is beyond them and they couldn't possibly say "i don't know" .. fortunately our doctor can. he is supportive but admits it is well beyond his knowledge.

I am still in shock of the concept of you being locked up but then I think back and remember how the same would have happened to Peter if I had not been with him at the doctor's appointment. I was already his carer so was allowed to leave with me but was sent for psychiatric assessment. Naturally he was assessed as normal .. whatever normal is ;)

thanks so much for joining us and sharing your experience.
